With the first pick of the NFL draft, will the L.A. Rams select Jared Goff or Carson Wentz? Many Spundits (that’s Sports-Pundits) are feverishly debating that question, and half of them will look like geniuses on Friday.

But really, it’s a stupid question.

Why?

Because it doesn’t matter. The rams should have stayed put and taken the best available player at spot 15. Stan Kroenke traded away so many valuable picks for the sheer celebrity of it all. Having the number one pick in the draft keeps the Rams in the news cycle until the draft happens. Then after the draft, Spundits will write continuously about the number one pick in the draft.

It’s all free publicity, and that is how you sell tickets (in the short term, anyway.)

This was clearly not a football move. It was an ownership move. This had to have come from the top down, because Jeff Fisher and Les Snead know that building a winning football team takes more than a rookie quarterback. But Kroenke needs to create a buzz around the arrival of the Rams. And what better way to create a buzz, then to create a celebrity out of either Wentz or Goff.

Hopefully for the Rams sake, their quarterback will turn into a celebrity. Otherwise, we’ll see how many tickets they sell if they don’t play winning football….
